About Me

A space for anyone who’s ever picked up knitting needles and thought, “Where do I even start?”

Tracey (Founder)

I created Sisters That Stitch to help beginners feel more confident with knitting. Whether you’re picking it up for the first time or coming back after years away, you’ll find simple guides, patterns, and support to help you get started.

Getting Started with Knitting (Even If It Feels a Bit Intimidating)

Starting knitting — or even picking it back up after years away — can feel surprisingly daunting.

You’d think it would be simple. Just grab some needles and yarn and off you go. But in reality, there’s often that little voice in your head saying, “What if I get it wrong?”

That’s exactly how our founder, Tracey, felt when she decided to give knitting another go.

“I bought all the materials I thought I’d need — wool in different colours, 4mm knitting needles — and just used scissors I already had in my sewing box. I was really inspired to knit trauma teddies, but following a pattern… now that felt very scary.”

And that’s the thing — it’s not always a lack of knowledge that holds us back. More often, it’s a lack of confidence in using what we already know.

The Fear of Getting It Wrong

There’s something about knitting patterns that can make them feel far more complicated than they actually are. Rows, stitches, abbreviations… it can look like a different language at first glance.

But the truth is, everyone starts in exactly the same place.

And mistakes? They’re part of it.

Dropped stitches, uneven tension, things that don’t quite look like they should — it’s all completely normal. In fact, it’s how you learn.

Because really… what’s the worst that can happen?

You unravel it and try again.

Learning as You Go (Thank You, YouTube)

One of the best things about learning to knit today is that you’re never really stuck.

Can’t remember how to cast on?
Not sure how to increase stitches?
Completely forgotten how to join a new thread?

That’s where trusty YouTube comes in.

A quick search and you’ll find step-by-step videos for just about everything. You can pause, rewind, and follow along at your own pace — no pressure, no judgement.

(Or, of course, you could always pop over to our home page and use our videos… just saying.)

Confidence Comes After You Start

The biggest hurdle is often just getting out of your own way.

Once you stop worrying about doing it perfectly and just have a go, something shifts. You realise it’s not about getting everything right first time — it’s about getting comfortable with the process.

From there, it’s simply a case of practice.

Walk Before You Run

If there’s one piece of advice we’d always give, it’s this: start simple.

It’s tempting to jump straight into a big project (we’ve all been there), but taking the time to practise the basics properly makes everything easier later on.

Focus on:

  • Getting your stitches even
  • Finding a comfortable tension
  • Repeating the same techniques until they feel natural

Because if your stitches are too tight, for example, the next step becomes much harder than it needs to be.

Get those foundations right, and suddenly knitting starts to flow. Your hands relax, your confidence grows, and moving on to more complex patterns feels far less intimidating.

Just Start — That’s the Hardest Part

Knitting doesn’t require perfection. It doesn’t even require confidence to begin with.

It just requires you to start.

Make the wonky scarf.
Get the stitches wrong.
Undo it. Try again.

Before long, you’ll realise that what once felt complicated now feels second nature — and that “daunting” first step wasn’t quite as big as it seemed.

If you’re at that stage right now, hovering over the needles and not quite sure where to begin — this is your sign.

Starting something new can feel overwhelming, but knitting doesn’t have to be complicated. With the right guidance and a bit of patience, it becomes something relaxing, creative, and genuinely rewarding. If you’re ready to begin, you’re in exactly the right place.
